Rates and orders of chemical reactions

  • Reaction rate from the slope of a graph of reactant or product against time
  • Effect of concentration of reactants
  • Effect of catalysts (including enzymes)
  • (Effect of temperature)
  • Rate order of a chemical reaction
  • Almost any of the reactions described on this website could be used to obtain graphs suitable for determining and comparing reaction rates. A particularly good one is the iodination of propanone which is simple, low-hazard and reliable and has the added advantage that it can easily be used to demonstrate zero, first and second order reaction kinetics. The decomposition of crystal violet, reaction of potassium iodide with ferric chloride, iodine clock reaction and reaction of sodium thiosulphate with acid are alternatives.

The colorimeter is not particularly suitable for investigations into the effect of temperature though it can be done. The reactants can be held in a water bath and samples taken at timed intervals for measurement. Alternatively the colorimeter can be kept at a constant temperature in an incubator or refrigerator and continuous readings taken using the wireless connectivity to a tablet or phone. This works well but there is a limited range of temperatures to which the colorimeter can be subjected.
